Default New to GW and want to make a Necromancer.

Well as the title says i am new to Guild Wars right now working on the trial version till the copy i ordered comes in this week. I have been looking over some Necro builds and see most N/Me builds use skills from Nightfall once of the Exp i wont be getting. I only put in an order for Guild Wars & Factions. Right now my Necro is lvl 4 or 5 on the trial and i have not put any points in to any thing, pretty much just been doing quest cause i really don't want to F her up and remake lol.

On to the point i would like to know if any one could help me with a good build for N/Me useing the items and spells from Guild Wars and Factions, from what i know so far i will need a good curse set and energy set so help from any one would be much appreciated and this is for PvE.

everything in guild wars regarding your character is non-permanent (except name, looks, primary profession). so you can change points and skills and secondary professions as many times as you'd like.

personally i'd recommend a minion master. but if your really intent on making a curses necro (remember you can always change at any time), then some key skills would be: [enfeebling blood (pve)] [faintheartedness] [insidious parasite]

note: these are for low-level necros. when you hit lvl20 with 8 man teams, you'll find skills like [barbs] and [mark of pain] will be more effective.

you won't get any elite skills until much later in the game, so i won't mention any of those yet.

First off, welcome to your new favorite game!

Since this is your first character (of many to come), necromancer is a good choice. Do not worry so much about your secondary profession right now, that get too overwhelming at first.

Minion Master is a very good way to start out your new necromancer. They're pretty easy to use and can be very effective. The key thing you need to know as a minion master is that your success depends upon how many corpses there are. If not a lot of enemies are dying or they're non-physical creatures, there will be no army for you to raise and control. This is especially important when in a group with other necromancers. Before starting a mission, ask a fellow necromancer in your group if they're using death magic. If they are, change to a curses build (more advanced), or simply find another group.

Best of luck to you!

You'll probably want [spiteful spirit] at some point. Though it will take you some time to get to it in Prophecies. There are many skills I like more, but SS is very typical damage dealer for curse necros.

Well the reason i was picking N/Me Curse was i did read some where that it was an easy spec to work with for some one new to Guild Wars, As for MM isent that Minion Master? I was seeing its was a-bit hard to keep all the Minions up :/. I'm just trying to find a spec i can work with so when i reach lvl 20 and get more in to Guild Wars i will know about more about Necro's and there specs + spell rotations.

nah, mm's (minion master's) are pretty straightforward. just spam [blood of the master] as much as you can without dying to keep your minions alive. you have probably read about the advanced minion bombing build which is the prevalent mm in end-game...which is indeed harder to run (mostly because of buggy interface) but that's totally unnecessary to run at this point.

Wouldn't matter. My Minion Master (MM) doesn't use any secondary skills. You can make a very effective build without Nightfalls, although Jagged Bones is a nice elite. If I knew how to post a build on here, I'd give you some sample builds you could use.

My best advice is to just keep screwing around and learning about the game. If you're anything like me, you'll go through 5 different characters before you find one you like and stick with for a while.

^what he said

these are the options that will help with pre-searing and lower-levels up to lvl20.
by the time you hit high levels, you can easily switch anyways, so i won't discuss end-game builds options.

edit: ordered in terms of usefulness/personal preference

ranger: [charm animal] i'd prolly get flamed for this, but it helps in pre-searing and low level areas...when you get to high levels, then you can ditch it or keep it for the awesomness factor (pets are awesome!!!!)
elementalist: [glyph of lesser energy] can help with e-management. again you receive it in pre-searing, so it helps during low levels.
monk: meh... [bane signet] for free damage and to fill up empty skill slots during low levels. (only ranked high because of class usefulness past lvl20)
war: [healing sig] got a recent buff, and you get it in pre-searing
mesmer: [ether feast] also got a recent buff...i'd recommend an interrupt, but you won't be able to get one until much later

^ only thing i would recommend there is [glyph of lesser energy] since low lvls have low energy with costly skills.

i would say dont bother with glyph of lesser energy... at low levels where energy is a problem you really need your points for death magic so you can amp up your minions levels... also the number of minions allowed is regulated by the level of death magic, so if you are putting into elemental attributes to make energy glyph better you will be taking from your death magic attributes.... much better in my opinion to invest in soul reaping...

Soul reaping is an insane energy pool...

YES. This is one of the big attractions for playing necromancers! I get so frustrated with other casters because it seems to take forever for their energy bar to jump back up, where with the necros as soon as something near you dies you get a nice boost.

N/Me doesn't seem to be too popular, but I've had a lot of fun with mine. Pretty much the only Mesmer skills ever on my bar are Conjure Phantasm and Ether Feast, the rest are all Necro. I tend to switch her between MM and a sort of Blood-and-Curses build, depending on the quest/environment/etc. that I'm running her through. As was previously said, nothing is permanent and if you need to switch some skill points around to adjust what your character is best at it's a piece of cake.

most new necromancer players think that there best bet is to go with a strong mm build like n/rit. BUT DON'T.... the arn't that good and my advice would be to go necro/assasin. Make a blood bar with teli skills and with degin. It's very powerfull in any campain and u won't regret it.

Offensive blood magic is crap. It'll work in Normal mode, but it's still crap.
What is good, is the curses line. Use things like [Mark of Pain], [Barbs], [Enfeebling Blood] and mabye stuff like [Spiteful Spirit],[Assassin's Promise] works wonders too - That, you will not regret.

Just for fun, I tried to make an offensive Blood Magic build for PvE HM. I ended up with a telespiking N/A build and the only two Blood Magic skills that were on the bar were Signet of Agony and Unholy Feast... and those were the worst skills on the bar.

Alright, you can run Spoil Victor, but that's reactive hexing. It's not an offensive bar.

As much as reactive hexing sucks, Moloch, I'd rather a Blood Necro run [[Spoil Victor] than [[Blood is Power]. BiP FTL.

On my Necro Doom Squad (Olias, Livia, Master) I have Livia running an SV build for HM. With all of Olias' minions running around if an AoE nuke gets tossed at them... whatever cast that nuke goes BOOM.

Still... reactive hexing does suck - some forms just suck less than others.
